Klingon
I speak Klingon and am a member of the Klingon Language Institute. Yes, Klingon (tlhIngan Hol) is a real language, which you can learn and use to communicate with other people.
boQwI’ (Klingon Assistant)
boQwI’ is a popular Android app for the Klingon language. It is most commonly used to look up vocabulary, but it is also capable of performing lexical analysis. It is written in Java and backed by an SQLite database, which is kept up to date with the latest information. (New information is revealed by Dr. Marc Okrand, the language’s creator, on a fairly regular basis.)
I created the very first version for the HTC Dream (Android API 1), and have continuously upgraded its codebase with each API release to meet current recommended practices and add new features. It is available on Google Play, Amazon, Microsoft, and F-Droid.
There is also an accompanying text-to-speech engine which is available on Google Play and Amazon.
The family of projects is open-source, with the source files hosted on GitHub:
Projects inspired by boQwI’
boQwI’ is the basis of a number of projects by other people:
- There is an iOS port of the app, which is available from the Apple store. The source code is on GitHub.
- There is an Anki study deck for Klingon vocabulary which is built using the boQwI’ database.
- The Klingon Assault Group’s Language Academy uses the audio files from the boQwI’ text-to-speech engine.
- The database is searchable online using a web browser at klingonia.fi.
- An analysis of actual and possible one-syllable words using the database.
